Seek App & Activity for Kids
Seek is a great alternative app to iNaturalist. Seek is an app created by iNaturalist that can still identify 20,000 species just by scanning the plant, animal, or insect with your camera, but it has a few key differences.
- You don’t have to have an account; just download and start taking pictures!
- Kids can use it safely. On iNaturalist you can share information with others, but when you make an observation on Seek, the information does not leave your tablet or phone.
- It works without internet.
- You can use Seek to identify wild and cultivated species. iNaturalist is meant for wild species, so it is better to use Seek for cultivated plants such as tulips.
- Earn badges for observing different types of species and participating in challenges.
- You cannot use Seek to participate in the City Nature Challenge, as you are not sharing your observations, but it is still a fantastic way to get out and learn about the natural world around you.
The Arboretum has a fun activity kids can complete while using the Seek app on your visit or in your neighborhood. Use the Seek ID Bingo Worksheet to make identifying plants, animals, and insects into a game of Bingo!
